The most memory for any 32 bit version is 4 GB. Windows 7 Home Premium can address up to 16 GB. Step up to Windows 7 Professional and the memory limit jumps to 192 Gigabytes. Very significant. That's 3000 times (3072) the range simply between Window 7 Home Premium and Professional. Either can run After Effects CS5 but to really take advantage of the render and real time editing capability, it's not a tough decision to make for the nominal expense upgrading to Windows Professional.

Any plugins that you use in After Effects must also have been re-written in 64 bit to work with this new release. Red Giant has released it's 64 bit version of the complete Trapcode Suite CS5 with Knoll Light Factory 64 bit version scheduled to be released in June.

There is another special advantage to these stars and their 64 bit club membership and that is memory management. The 4 applications that share 64 bit addressing can also dynamically share memory space. This is great for you as you blend these resources, switching from one application to another. By defining memory they can share, Adobe takes care of the sharing part. As you copy from say Premiere Pro or encode a video that you will open next in After Effects to add your effects and other layers, this memory dynamically shifts your memory allocations and needs according to your activity.

As you view your memory assignments with the applications that share, you can view more detail in the preferences menu under 'Details'. This option displays the minimum necessary, max usable, and current memory allocation for this shared resource between your 'stars'. This is a great way to get a feel for the different tasks and what kinds of demands are placed on this resource. At a time when resources like memory and disk space are more affordable than ever, this may help you make a decision in that area.
