Steve jobs in wwdc2007 said that most of the computers they have shipped happen to be 64bit.And i suppose yours is 64bit too,and even if its not you won't have any problem in installing it and running the os just for ordinary stuff like what you might be doing now with your powerbook.The 64bit compatibility only comes in handy when your dealing with a lot of graphics and the usual graphics would work fine with any(mac) computer of your configuration but i'd advice you to double you ram though.
