Display Resolutions Overview

Here are the most commonly used display resolutions and aspect ratios, plus how they're typically used.  To view a full line-up of commercial and home theater projectors in these resolutions, visit www.digitalprojection.com.

1280 x 720 (720p - 16 x 9 or 1.78:1): Great for High Definition Video applications.  Digital Projection projectors in HD include the iVision 20 HD.

1400 x 1050 (SX+ - 4 x 3 or 1.33:1): Predominantly a computer resolution. Also excellent for edge blending as the 4 x 3 aspect ratio maximizes screen height. Digital Projection projectors in sx+ resolution include the single-chip dVision sx+ and three-chip TITAN sx+ and LIGHTNING sx+.

1920 X 1080 (1080p - 16 x 9 or 1.78:1): The benchmark for full 1080 high definition displays.  Digital Projection's 1080p projectors include the single-chip iVision, M-Vision and dVision projectors, plus three-chip TITAN and LIGHTNING 1080p projectors.

1920 x 1200 (WUXGA - 16 x 10 or 1.6:1): Outstanding for applications where both computer and 1080p sources will be displayed, as well as Video Editing where extra pixels allow for viewing the Operating System’s taskbar without blocking Video.  Digital Projection's WUXGA projectors include the three-chip TITAN and LIGHTNING WUXGA projectors.

2048 x 1080 (2K resolution - 1.89:1): Although this aspect ratio doesn't match the native aspect ratio of films which are typically 1.85 or 2.35:1, this format is predominantly used for digital cinema.

Should I get a Apple Cinema display or a LCD TV for my Powermac G5?

I am planning to buy some type of monitor for my Powermac G5. The Mac Cinema display is $899 and is 24 inches. However, I am thinking that I can get a decent sized flat screen tv for that price or less. My question is, would there be any lag using the tv for computer purposes such as video editing etc. Or should I just get the Cinema Display.

The Apple 24" LED Cinema Display will not work with your Powermac G5.

You will have to use some other monitor.

The LED Cinema Display will only work with the newer Macs that have a miniDisplayPort-- It will not work with older Macs that only have ACD, VGA or DVI.
