Smartcards In Access Control Solutions For Work Places
Most workplaces these days have restricted access, if not to their whole facility, to key areas housing consumer or company specific data. This is especially true in urban areas, but equally true of any organization that must collect personal data or work on sensitive topics, chemical formulations, etcetera. These days, it is also easy to secure your facilities and still provide convenient employee access when and as needed through the use of smart cards, also known as RFID cards.
Many people are familiar with access control cards, specifically cards of the magnetic stripe variety. While these work fairly well, they carry and provide limited data, and they also tend to scratch easily and have to be replaced often. They are also extremely sensitive to magnets. Smart cards or RFID cards on the other hand can both carry and collect data, so you can use them as part of your overall access management planning and reporting.
What is more, these cards can be had with different frequencies that can be read from distances of a few inches to several feet away and they are completely contactless. You can also add PIN access for more heightened security or in case of fears that the cards could be lost or stolen. You could also use the cards to keep track of employee use of machines, purchases at the cafeteria, access to parking, payroll, you name it. The cards can also easily be clipped to a belt, or worn around the neck so that your employees can truly have hands free access.
While changing to an RFID system can be a big investment, it is one that definitely pays off quickly. With good implementation planning you can ease your reporting burden enormously by using an RFID to collect and manage your data. The cards themselves are not expensive and can be purchased in bulk for as little as .46 cents apiece. You can easily both add and remove data from the cards by way of an external interface, yet the cards can also be secured against unauthorized use.
Many companies are switching over to RFID cards for all of their controlled access needs. They may well be the way of the future and are certainly an investment that pays off in a very short time.
