When To Contact A Cord Blood Bank Medical practitioners advise yet-to-be parents to plan for cord blood stem cell banking as early as the fourth month of the pregnancy. Most of the parents decide to bank cord blood cells if they have a family history of a particular disease that is treatable by bone marrow transplant or have a family member who is ailing with one of the disease that suggest bone marrow transplant treatment. I know most of the technical pros and cons such as the cost but the ability to save your child if need be. I'm not having a baby, I was just thinking about it because of my sister and for future reference. Have any parents out there actually saved their childs cord blood? If so, do you mind sharing the story with us, especially if you have needed to use it? I feel that it is too expensive and it will be such a rare thing to actually need it but the guilt of possibly needing it when the child is older makes me confused of whether people should do it or not. Just curious. Thanks for your time in answering!
My vote goes to donation. It doesnt cost anything to donate the cord blood. In the us, it goes into the National Marrow Donor's Registry, which is where the cord blood came from for my stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant) to treat my leukemia. On unit is only going to be enough for a small child. Once you reach an adult sized body, you would need more than one unit. My transplant actually used 2 donated cord blood units. http://www.marrow.org Hereditary Condition Causing Limb Weakness Traced to Gene for Rare Disorder Thanks for visiting!
