Can I move Apple loops to an external hard-drive?

I've just been having a look at my mac's onboard hard-drive space with Grand Perspective, and half of it is being taken up by Apple Loops No wonder it's running slower than usual. I need to keep them though as I feel that I would need them for the future. I have an external hard-drive, so is there any quick and easy way to move them over to it without upsetting the computer's knowledge of the files' whereabouts?

In general on a mac you can move things and put an alias in the original location to point to the new location of the moved items. I am not sure if that will work for garageband (I presume that is what you are using the loops for) as the help screens indicate that gb indexes the loops. However the help screens tell you how to add loops from an external drive, see 2nd paragraph. Please note this is from garageband 3.0.4, so unless things have radically changed it must be similar on your version, just check the help screens first.

To add loops to the loop browser:
Drag loops, or a folder containing the loops, over the loop browser. The loops are added to the the loop library and to the index.

If you add loops located on a different drive or partition, a dialog appears asking whether you want to copy them to the loop library, or index them in their current location. If you add loops from the desktop, a dialog asks if you want to move them or index them in their current location.

If you add loops located on a CD or DVD, GarageBand copies them to the loop library.
