At hospital admitting desks, in accountants offices, and at video retail stores, I watch people perform tasks for which the desktop metaphor  with its cluttered surface and overlapping resizable windows  is at best a distraction and at worst an impediment.

Mac OSX Start Up Failure?

I have a eMac running OS 10.4.11. It has been running slowly. When I woke up this morning, it started up fine until it came to the desktop. Nothing was on my desktop, and the time and date weren't appearing. (and I tried clicking on the applications on the dock, nothing happened.) So I thought ok maybe its just taking a while to load. After waiting, I went to go use it and it was still frozen. Now ive been using the power button to restart it, and it still freezes. This could be a Finder Failure, but not sure what is going on.
EDIT (2): It was working fine last night!

Tried both answers. Safe Mode doesn't do anything, and I can't even get the computer to boot with the Software CD.
