With most analysts saying this year's version of the Toronto Maple Leafs will not be a good one, is there any reason at all to watch the blue and white this year? I will say yes, and here's a few things to look out for:

The Leafs Could Finally Play Some Defence

Its important to emphasize the "could" here, but there is legitimate reason to think the Toronto Maple Leafs could be better in their own end this year. Jeff Finger, even with his overpaid contract, is a nice step in this direction. The Maple Leafs are in need of defensive-minded blue liners who can play physical and handle the puck well in their own zone. An attribute that often is overlooked about Jeff Finger is that he commits very few turnovers. Any Leafs fan is all too familiar with what can result when one of your own defenders gives the puck away in your own end. This overlooked quality can go along way in helping reduce Toronto's goals against. He might not put up a lot of points on the score sheet, but expect Jeff Finger to fill his role in helping to keep the puck out of the back of the Maple Leaf's net.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are also working on signing Swedish blue liner Jonas Frogren. While he is not very well known to many fans in North America, he is a solid veteran in the Swedish Elite League. He has also played well when paired with fellow Maple Leaf's defenseman Anton Stralman on Team Sweden. He reportedly likes to hit, and he could end up being a pleasant surprise for any fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs to watch.

Another point for Leafs fans to remember is the possibility that number one draft pick Luke Schenn could make the Leafs roster this year. If he is deemed ready at the Leaf's training camp, head coach Ron Wilson won't hesitate to play him. Regardless of whether or not that happens though, I still believe that the Leafs will see their goals against drop this season.

New Players To Keep An Eye On

One more thing for Toronto Maple Leafs fans to look out for, are some potentially exciting new players who will be making their blue and white debut this year. They are:

Nikolai Kulemin - The Russian superstar is Toronto's top prospect, and is said to have been guaranteed a spot in this year's roster by GM Cliff Fletcher. Given the lack of scorers in our lineup, this is most likely true. It's difficult to say what fans can expect from Kulemin, but he has earned a reputation in the Russian Super League as a physical player who isn't afraid to throw some hits, as well as a talented goal scorer. How he will handle his first season in the NHL remains to be seen, but high expectations have already been placed on him by some.

Mikhail Grabovski - Picked up in a trade from the Montreal Canadiens, this is another young player for Toronto Maple Leafs fans to keep an eye on. He had a great showing last year playing for the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, and impressed many people. This trade has somewhat flown under the radar, but Grabovski will probably see his fair share of playing time this year, again due to the Maple Leaf's lack of offensive depth. His playmaking skills could turn out to be exciting.

Niklas Hagman - He netted 27 goals last year for the Dallas Stars. That number is higher than any player on last year's Maple Leafs roster, besides of course, Mats Sundin. Hagman is a fast skater, and he is defensively aware. He will probably see plenty of ice time on the penalty kill as a result of this. He will also get his chance to prove that last season wasnt just his lucky year, and that given enough ice time, he can be a reliable goal scorer. If he is able to duplicate the showing he had last year, he will be a key player in giving the Toronto Maple Leafs some badly needed depth on offense.

If these new players can gel together under new head coach Ron Wilson, the Leafs might show they are not as dismal as people have been saying. Whether or not they can turn into a surprise competitor, or drop to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, the new changes made in the offseason should still make the Toronto Maple Leafs an exciting team for their fans!
