PCI Network Card Troubleshooting: IRQ Conflicts
Nowadays PCI network cards usually are capable of supporting the plug-and-play function, and system will automatically assign an IRQ (interrupt request) to this adapter when installing its driver. If the scheduled IRQ of your network controller has been taken up by other devices like sound card, Modem, or video card, but the system is incapable of specifying another new IRQ to your network controller, well then it will stop working due to a hardware conflict, for example, some PCI Ethernet card is easy to have an IRQ conflict with the video card (both use IRQ 10). To fix this problem, you can look into the instruction about the priority of PCI slots in your motherboard manual, and then take out the conflicting device and plug it into another free PCI slot with a higher priority. You need to perform these exchanges till the hardware conflict disappears. Does it sound intricate and difficult for you? Don't bother! I have a better trick!
Step-by-step instructions:
Step 1 Click Start and select Control Panel.
Step 2 Click System twice to open the System Properties sheet.
Step 3 Choose Hardware and click Device Manager.
Step 4 In the Device Manager box, double-click Network Adapters and you will see the network controller in the drop down list.
Step 5 Right-click this controller and select Properties.
Step 6 Click Resources and choose IRQ in the Resources Settings list.
Step 7 Cancel Use automatic settings, choose Change Setting and click OK.
Then system will reassign a new IRQ for your net card, finally you will see No conflicts in the Conflicting device list.

my computer doesnt have an ethernet card as i took it out - can you get a usb key to convert into an ethernet card?
Yes, but you might want to consider replacing the ethernet card you removed for performance reasons.
If you do go the USB route, you need to be sure your computer has USB 2 ports and that you use one of them
