How to tell the signal flow on a firewire cable?

Got a camcorder. It's a 4pin to 4pin firewire cable. I've heard that I can damage the camcorder if I don't stick the cable in the right way. I can't find any markings on the cable to indicate which way to put the cable in and connect it to the card. Help?

Most camcorder firewire ports are 4 pin, while the firerwire cards in the PC are 6 pin. If you really need 4 pin to 4 pin it doesn't matter which way round the cable is, but I suspect you've got the wrong cable.
