Often, I get told that a computer is too old and that is why it's slow and when I take a closer look I find that there is in fact nothing wrong with the computer. And with a few changes and or hardware additions to the system, better performance would be experienced giving us more speed for our aging computer. Most of the time, doing the little fixes I suggest below will give you the speed you need without having to go out and spend more money on a new computer.

5 Ways To Speed Up Windows Without Buying A New Computer
The first lesson you need to know about upgrading and fixing computers is to keep it simple and start with the easiest, cheapest solution to any problem and work your way up from there. Having said that, I am listing the top 5 ways to speed up Windows without having to buy a new computer:
-
Check for free disk space
Windows is a space hog and if you run Microsoft Office as well you are taking more space. Add pictures, jokes, documents, downloads, music, games and everything else used on a computer and you can run out of space really fast. Several things you can do to reclaim lost hard drive space is to empty the recycle bin for starters. Next, check the list of installed programs and remove every piece of software you haven't used in at least 6 months. If you really need it in the future, you can simple re-install it at that time but for now we are trying to save disk space remember, so un-install it and don't look back. -
Use ReadyBoost
If you are currently using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then you have an extra option for getting maximum speed out of your slow computer. ReadyBoost works by works by using flash memory, USB drives, SD cards, CompactFlash, external hard drives or any other kind of storage media that can be connected and used as a drive for creating extra disk cache. I recommend using small compact cards so they can be plugged in and forgotten about as opposed to keeping a large external hard drive connected to your computer. To activate ReadyBoost on your drive, just right-click on the letter of your disk, choose PROPERTIES and then click on the ReadyBoost tab to configure the use of your drive. The rule of thumb is to connect and use a device that is at least 3 times larger than the size of your existing memory for best performance. As they would say in late night infomercials...set it and forget it! -
Add more memory to the system
Memory or RAM as it's better known is often over looked as a simple and inexpensive solution for getting better performance and more speed out of your slow Windows computer. If you only have 512MB run to the store out of embarassment and get yourself an upgrade right now! In this day and age of advance gaming and software requirements, you should consider having a minimum of 2GB (gigabytes) but preferably 4GB would be more suitable if your system can take it. To find out how much memory or RAM is installed in your computer system, all you have to do is right click on MY COMPUTER and then choose PROPERTIES. You will see some interesting bits of information such as which version of Windows you are currently running and how much memory (RAM) is installed on your computer system. Finally, if you are not sure what type you need to buy, just take a stick of memory (it's usually green and there may be two, three of four of them already install inside the computer) out of your PC and take it to your local electronics store and they will be able to help you find what you need quite easily. -
Add a larger Hard Disk Drive to the computer system
If you hard drive is full and you cannot free up anymore space by deleting the recycle bin and un-installing programs and games you will have no choice but to add another hard drive to your computer system. It used to be a lot harder to do since you had to open the case and do a physical upgrade but now it's much more simple with external USB drives. They are quite affordable these days so just remember that when you are shopping, the more you pay, the larger the amount of storage you will get. Look out also for sale flyers as there are always great deals to be had on hard disk drives. Once you add a new hard drive to your system, move all your personal documents to it so as to free up disk space on your main drive and allow Windows to use it. Or you can use your new hard disk drive to re-install Windows as discussed in the last tip below.
-
Backup your files and re-install Windows operating system
The best way to re-claim lost disk space is by formatting your hard disk drive and re-installing Windows. Before you do this, make sure to backup all your files as they will be lost if you format your hard drive. Files you should consider backing up are personal files and business files such as documents, images, music, resume, accounting, address book, bookmards and favorites. When you have backed up all your files, insert your Windows CD into drive and re-start the computer making sure it starts using the CD. You will be given the option to erase all your hard drive and re-install Windows, go ahead and follow all the steps. You will be given the option to repair Windows as well but skip this since our goal here to get disk space back.
