Customer Review: I had to drive about a month, so I can not really evaluate your life, but it was easy to install (I installed the Web server to add more positions), and had no problems so far. All our drives are WD and I have never had an accident yet. We have "Western Digital WD20EARS". And you can BuyingWestern Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS Very pleased with this hard drive. This is the third WD hard drive I have ever purchased. I have been pleased with all of them so far. The other two replaced original drives in a 13" VAIO and a DELL desktop. This one replaced the original 320GB in my iMAC. Interestingly enough, the replaced drive in my iMac was a Western Digital. This drive is so quiet that I can not hear it over the background noise in my home office. It boots up faster than the original and has TONS of space. I am tempted to get a second one to replace the original drive in my brand new i7 MacBook Pro. Apple wants $50 to upgrade the original 5400 rpm 500GB to a 7200 rpm 500GB. For $80 more, you'll get 4x the storage and keep the old drive! As usual, purchasing through Amazon was easy and the drive arrived as promised. Thanks WD and Amazon! CheapWestern Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS It was a good buy The hard drive was shipped quickly and I have no problems. Always keep in mind that the warranty period is 2 to 3 years and its more than worth it. DiscountWestern Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS Ease of use. Not much to say except this simply went into my HP Windows Home Server for additional storage. Easy to install and add as additional storage. SaveWestern Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS Quiet The I bought this drive for my Shuttle SG41J1 Plus and it runs very quietly. Usually, you can hear a drive while it is being accessed. It helps that this also has a 64MB cache, so it does appear to run a little faster too. Lowest PriceWestern Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS Works as promised These drives work great in my MacPro and provide loads of additional space, which is needed these days. Where To BuyWestern Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS 2 TB Caviar Green - Good price for a lot of storage Got the drive last week and have it in place as my offsite archieve drive. I had purchased the Thermaltake BlacX eSATA docking station and use this drive in that device. When I got it I did a full format which I think is a very good idea before using a drive the first time. It did take forever though - 6 1/2 hours on a very fast PC. But again, 2 TB is a lot of storage and it is doing a write to each sector and marking any bad sectors, etc. Ended up with 1.8 TB available. I have Vista so had no problems with formatting and use. But, if you have XP, you will need to go to Western Digitals site and download and run some "align" software since this is an "advanced format" drive which will not work in XP until you run the patch. The drive in the docking station, is as fast as my internal C drive in terms of file transfers and general access. I did a 340 GB file transfer of my photography folders in 1 hr 46 min, while doing negative scans and work in Photoshop. Pretty fast. It would have taken over 6 hours if I had used the USB connection on the BlacX box. The drive doesn't seem to run very hot, but again this is outside in that docking station versus in an enclosure. So far so good and would recommend Western Digital as they along with Seagate produce high quality drives. The only comment I would make is Amazon's packaging. It could and should have been much better. Western Digital packaged the drive pretty securely in a box, which Amazon tossed into another box like they do with books and put a small piece of bubble wrap on top. I'm not sure what they thought that was supposed to accomplish as the box in the box was in to way secure and it no doubt got shook around in transit. transition to a mac-purchase and manage of data?
I want a mac mostly for the design appeal, particularly the use of adobe illistrator and some other creative suite software, what type shuould I get (imac, macpro..) and do I need to upgrade hardrave space...also, my music may also be an issue: right now I have a zen micro, and all my music is in windows media player. is this an issue? do I have to get an ipod? anything youve got for me is helpfull. THANKS GUYS
If you are just starting out, but have close to $2000, I would check out the iMac 24-inch, with either 256MB ATI or nVidia graphics card. As far as the music migration goes, I do not know if the Zen will work with the Mac, but if you want to transfer your music to the iMac then:
1. Install Apple iTunes 7 (free download from www.apple.com) to your PC. Make sure when downloading, to specify the version for the Windows you are running, ie. Windows2000, WindowsXP, or WindowsVista.
2. During the installation process of iTunes on the PC, you will be prompted to convert any existing WMA, MP3, MP4, and WAV files to an iTunes format. Click yes, or if there is now a radio button for selecting that option, make sure to click it. (On iTunes 7, there was a checkbox for selecting that option)
3. Let the iTunes 7 installation complete and take the software on a spin to see if all of the music transferred successfully. If so, this means that all of the music can now be transferred as files to your new Mac.
4. If you have a DVD-R or CD-R burner drive, I would select all of the music as possible in iTunes 7 to be burned to a data CD. You can do this by going to the iTunes "File Menu" and select "Preferences". In the pop-up window select the tab "Advanced". In this window, select the "Burning" button, and underneath that are options for various types of CD burning available. Select "Data CD". This burn the files to a format that iTunes 7 on the Mac will understand and use.
As for all of your other files (Photoshop, Word, Illustrator, Gimp, Excel) as long as you have these applications for Mac, the Mac and PC versions of each of these programs will read the other's format, so don't worry about this. I would however, take all of the fonts on the Windows PC and burn them to CD for transferring to the Mac. You can do this (if you are using Roxio software on the PC) by going to the Windows Control Panel, select the "Fonts" icon by double-clicking. Next create on the Windows desktop, create another folder and label it "Fonts". Now select all of the font items in the Control Panel Fonts and drag them to the new "Fonts" folder on the desktop. This will not delete the Fonts installed in the Control Panel, this is just making a copy of their source files. In Roxio Create, if that is what you have, go to the option for burning a Data CD or DVD (depending on which disc type you have installed in the burner drive) and burn the desktop located "Fonts" folder and its contents to this disc. When you get the new Mac, just install this disc in the system and open the Mac application "Font Book" and select the files on this disc for installation. This help sync the fonts available on both your Mac and your PC computers. (Both Microsoft WindowsXP and Apple MacOS X use and are compatible with "TrueType" fonts. If you get a new Mac, use this information to guide you, but if you run into any problems or have any doubts, and you bought the Mac through www.apple.com or an Apple Store, though you may have to pay a small sum unless you got the complete Applecare warrant, just schedule a visit one of the Apple Store's Geniuses and ask them for help in transferring data files, music, and fonts from the PC to the Mac (they may not officially support Windows, but they may help you figure out how to get data files off the PC). If possible, have them help you set up the new Mac in the store if you buy the Mac at an Apple Store as well.
