Selling house and inspector says my ground rod for breaker box is buried 3-4 inches and needs to be unburied?

Does this sound right and why? Don't know much about this topic. I have not got the inspection repor so I don't have all the details yet?

It sounds like the rod has become buried over time, maybe some soil has collected on top of it. there are lots of different methods for those rods to be buried, so I assume that inspector knows the method for your jurisdiction, and is not misleading you. I've always pushed them into the ground, leaving 2 or 3 inches sticking out. There is a clamp for that which is not a split clamp, and yours is probably buried.

To get it out? Maybe you just need to dig the dirt away from it. I doubt you could pull it up, unless you have a good-sized tractor. If all else fails, you could push another one in, assuming you have enough of the ground wire to work with. It is 8 foot long, and not easy to drive down. We used to have a special attachment for our hammer drill that fit over the rod like a socket. that was after our journeyman ruined his back with the sledge hammer.

Edit: there's a ton of wrong info here so far. The ground rod connects to the main panel buss via bare copper wire. It is required to be bonded to neutral where the main disconnect is ( a main breaker), and then it continues on to the meter. Another wire goes to the entrance point of your water service, and is clamped there. Also, if there is a device on that pipe that may become separated, such as a pressure-reducer, you must put a clamp above and below it to ensure that the pipe inside and outside of the house is grounded.

Many peopl have assumed that you meant the rod was only buried 3 to 4 inches deep, but that doesn't make any sense. I think what you meant is that the top of the rod is no longer visible. In that case, you might get away with changing the grade of the soil there so it is exposed.

Also, there may be some jurisdictions that bury the rod and wire, but it sounds like yours is not one of them. It should be sticking out of the ground just enough to get a clamp on it.

Further, if there is one buried, there might be another there or two. Some jurisdictions require more than one. If that is true, whatever you do, don't cut or damage that wire, it has to be unspliced from the main panel buss to the last rod.
