Why does my laptop close programs after the lid is shut then reopened?

I use a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7. Why is it that when I open Sims 3, use the program awhile, then shut the lid and reopen the lid with the program still running, the program is shut down? It is very frustrating because I can't save my work and my laptop has to be closed while not in use.

when ur laptop closes, it goes into sleep mode. so it basically turns off. i can't really help u
