MacBook and Optical surround audio.?

I bought a Toslink cable and connected it to My MacBook and my Surround Sound System. Everything works fine. I can play my iTunes music in stereo mode and I even get nice 5.1 audio when I play DVDs. My question is if I can play my iTunes music through more than 2 speakers, say 4 speakers and a subwoofer, and having the same volume exerted from all the speakers.

Yes and No.

It's going to be a fake effect - with my HiFi, I have extra settings - there's Stereo, Pro-Logic, and additionally 'Hall' gives main speakers at the front with reinforcing sound from speakers around, and then 'Rock' sets them all at full volume - but this is a DSP (Digital Signal Processing) effect, not an EQ effect, in your HiFi.
