Can I upgrade my Power Mac G3 Blue & White with a standard G4 CPU?

I would like to upgrade my PMG3 B&W with a G4 zif upgrade. I was going to get a Sonnet chip and run the patcher to enable my OS X Tiger for the G4. However, it would be cheaper to just snag a, say, 700 MHz G4 (over 700 downgrades the bus to 66 MHz) pulled from an old Power Mac G4. Would this still be compatible, or
do I need to get the CPU from Sonnet or PowerLogix?? I could still run the patching program for the OEM G4 too right, or is it vendor specific?

I'll start by saying that I've never tried it but it should work, the only real problem I can think of is the sockets are different, the G3 B&W's are zif whereas the stock PM G4's use a much smaller socket (whose name I don't know). If you could find an adapter (unlikely but worth trying) then you should be ok. The patcher should work regardless, although Tiger should work on a G4 natively without patching. Also be aware that Apple only made a 700MHz G4 as an iMac (Towers were 667 or 733) or laptop, and I would be surprised if the CPU wasn't directly soldered to the board using a ball-grid array rather than a socket in those (in fact in the laptops I know it is). Your best bet I think would be the 667 out of an M8451LL/A (easiest to find / remove while still preserving your 100MHz bus speed) if you can adapt the socket. If not then the Sonnet / PL are your only options that I know of.
