Can someone help me? I took the polish off some boots and they now have streaks/lines in the polish.?

the boots were grenadier guard parade boots, and i only wanted the toes and heels to be mirror shiny. the old polish was flaking so i had to remove it all. They now have a wood-grain sort of effect, and there are slight lines down the sides. can i take them to a shoe-repair guy or not? any advice??

That's from the polish cracking. While in the military I used to spit shine my boots. We would apply wax polish to a rag, tightly wound around a couple of fingers. Then we would dip this into a small tray of alcohol. then, just start rubbing the wax on the boot in a circular motion. Just keep rubbing and the friction will heat the wax and smear it on the boot. The alcohol accelerates the drying of the liquid in the wax and causes the wax to spread out evenly and begin to shine. Apply to the entire boot using this technique and the cracks, small lines, etc will disappear. We used to put 2 or 3 coats on at a time, and the boots were good all week during which they were subjected to alot of abuse...
