Can you use an h.264 file in Final Cut Pro and if not how do you convert it?

I have a file that I am wanting to import into Final Cut Pro, but I am reading in various places that it cannot be done. Anyone know if this is true? And if you can't, how can you convert it to be FCP compatible?
