Is regular RAM compatible with a dual-channel capable motherboard?
I'm considering upgrading my motherboard but most boards on the market are listed as dual-channel. I currently have 2 1GB sticks of DDR2 RAM installed, different manafacturers but same clock speed (533). If I get a new dual-channel board will my old RAM still work?
Your new ram should work, and possibly even in dual channel mode. There is nothing special about DC memory. It comes off the line at the same time as normal ram. The only difference is that DC ram is packaged together, and guaranteeing that it will work in DC mode.
If it doesn't work in DC mode, go into the bios and set the memory to the speed of the slowest chip. Meaning if one has timings of 5-5-5-15 and the other is 4-4-4-12, make sure the ram is set up to run at 5-5-5-15, not auto.
