Clutch does not feel right on my bike?

i bought a gilera gsm 50 today and the clutch pulls in perfect and works perfect its just seems the biting point is miles away from the bars and i have to push the handle to get the gears to engage. Is it the return spring? and is there anyway i can change the biting point?

I take it back about which way to go on the adjustment. tried to answer before my coffee. More free play moves the friction point closer to the bars. Apologies to Jay, who had it right. (smacking my forehead with the heel of my hand.)

It still sounds as if you have a sticky cable, either from lack of lubrication or from routing. Disconnect the cable from the handlebar lever. First make sure the pivot bolt is not causing the perch to pinch the lever, and that the lever moves freely.

Now, work the cable back and forth in its sheath, disconnecting the clutch end if necessary. Lubricate the cable using a cable oiler. If the steel coil shows through anywhere, that is an opportunity for moisture and corrosion to get in. Replace the cable if possible; otherwise use shrink tubing to repair the sheath.

Make sure the cable is routed so that it is free of sharp bends that can cause it to stick in its sheath. Ideally, the inner should move as freely with the cable in place as it does off the bike.
Odds are, taking care of the cable will cure any problems. If not, at least you can rule out the cable as the cause.
