Sony Vaio - Would I be able to retrieve files after using system recovery discs?

I just turned on my old computer the other day to get some old files and the screen went black, gave me a "system 32 failure" message, and failed to do anything else. I've tried opening it in safe mode; nothing works. I don't have the original Windows XP discs - the computer is several years old. So, would doing a system recovery delete all of my files & documents or would I be able to get them back? Thanks for any replies!
