Can the unibody late 2008 Model MacBook Pro play HD movies?

To be specific:
1) If I connect my laptop to my television using a HMDI will I get full 1080p if the movie/film is 1080p?
2) Can I use a PS3/Xbox 360 to stream this movies? If I cannot use the HDMI wire to get full HD quality on my television.
3) The movie files are .mkv

1) Yes, you will need a Mini DisplayPort adapter that gives you either straight HDMI output, or a DVI one that you can then use with a DVI - HDMI converter. You shouldn't get any loss in resolution, the TV is basically a monitor. The new Pros should have the graphics oopmh to power a 1080p TV.

2) I'm not sure you'd be able to, by all means you can convert the file to something that the 360 or PS3 can read and then play it off the hard drive, but do you mean stream from your laptop to the ps3/360 and then play on the TV? I don't think you can with a macbook.

3) That shouldn't be a problem. The mkv file format is a "container", it simply holds video data (that could be encoded as quicktime or whatever) and audio data (it's popular because it can hold multiple audio tracks easily). Your laptop will cope with the decoding - when you output via the displayport you're really just using your TV as a second monitor.
