Lenovo Ideapad Y550 Multi-media Laptop Computer Review

A True Multimedia Notebook.

The Lenovo Ideapad Y550 is part of Lenovo's new line of revamped laptops. It’s no secret that Lenovo has been making great business notebooks with the ThinkPad line for quite some time, but they’ve never had anything that was for general and multimedia use.

The Y550 is a multi-media maven’s dream with many options that cater to them like Nvidia GFX and Dolby sound. The Ideapad Y550 also comes with a 15.6-inch widescreen display with 16:10 aspect ratio. It has a little bit of everything power, portability and a great price. The Y550 comes with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor but can be upgraded for an additional price to a Core i7 processor. The starting prices on the Y550 laptops are very nice to at $669.

Specifications for the test Lenovo Ideapad Y550:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6600 (2.20GHz 800MHz 2MBL2)
  • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
  • nVidia Geforce G 210M graphic card with 512MB memory
  • 15.6 HD WLED Glossy, 1366*768 with 1.3M integrated Camera
  • 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz SODIMM Memory (2 Dimms)
  • 320GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
  • SuperMulti DVD Recordable (Tray type)
  • Intel WiFi Link 5100 1x2 (AGN) WLAN
  • 6 Cell Lithium-Ion 2.6Ah
  • 1Year Depot Warranty
  • $804.99

Conclusion

The Lenovo Ideapad Y550 is a good looking multi-media laptop with only a few places that need improvement. The heat and noise isn't too much and the performance is very good especially for a laptop that is under $900. The benefits of the discrete graphics are great it's not that expensive to upgrade on the Lenovo site. With some tinkering you can set yourself up a very nice Windows 7 laptop for under $1000

Pros:

  • Lid design
  • Performance to price ratio
  • Comfortable touchpad and keyboard

Cons:

  • Needs more USB ports
  • 1366x768 resolution screen

do i need to upgrade my gfx card?

- plus it never worked well for any game for the past year lol [well the only other game ive played is sims 3] but im not complaining since it was a gift; so does it need to be replaced or can i somehow by miracle get some juice out of it?
i don't usually play games and am not really into computers [except for facebook lol] but i recently bought arkham assylum and i get ridiculously low performance even at low resolutions - theres lots of jerking and it just doesnt work at all. my gfx card was a birthday present from a friend last year - i dont know what it is exactly on the box its just written "Rampage 700 Golden Sample".

Is this your graphics card? http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1696/gainward_rampage700_golden_sample_hd_4870_x2_on_steroids/index.html

The rest of your system must be old, because that card can DEFINITELY handle Arkham Asylum.

BTW, anyone who buys that for their friend's birthday is an awesome friend.
