Only leave them in as long as needed, but it works wonders on silver coins, brass items, copper and many other soft metals. It might stain stainless steel, (stain the stainless steel, oxymoron).

It is cheap, vinegar, and it can be used for any cleaning you need to do around the house. Try vinegar first.
